The word Kundalini in Sanskrit literally means coiled, and is usually symobolised by a sleeping serpent coiled at the base of the spine. Kundalini yoga practice facilitates the awakening of this instinctive energy force from the Muladhara chakra at the base of your spine up the subtle channel of the spine called Sushumna to the Sahasrara chakra at top of the head.
The awakening of the Kundalini Shakti is not a physical occurrence; it serves exclusively in the development of consciousness. When the awakening of Kundalini occurs our consciousness expands and we become more aware of the truth and our innate inner wisdom.
